I think the section on brute testing is the strongest simply she covers many other areas including captivity, factory farms, environmental degradation etc. I found the short history of animal welfare legislation in the United states of america fascinating. I think the section on animal testing is the strongest but she covers many other areas including captivity, factory farms, environmental degradation etc. I found the short history of creature welfare legislation in the US fascinating. It makes sense that the US Animal Welfare Human action would brainstorm with human's beloved for companion animals.
There are as well small sections throughout which discuss ethics in that philosophical manner which if you've ever read whatsoever brute rights ideals (eg. Tom Regan) is kind of dry and volition mostly be a rehash for those not new to the genre.
In some sections I felt like her arguments weren't fully formed. For case, in her affiliate on captivity she doesn't actually specifically explicate the differences between zoos and sanctuaries which make one more ethical than the other. (I admittedly believe sanctuaries, that is legitimate ones, are more than ethical, but her conclusion doesn't flow exactly from what's presented.)
I found just a few paragraphs to be bordering on speciesist, simply Gruen does present pro-exploitative points of view hither and there for challenging, including bits where pocket-size 'humane' farms are romanticized a chip too much for condolement. If I'g remembering correctly, there are a few places where she accepts that nonhuman animals may exist worth less than humans in terms of moral consideration because they lack a sense of 'I' and may not take 'concepts'. I will hopefully read more ethology in the time to come only I find such discourses ridiculous. Animals take desires, interests and aversions. How can they choose that they would like something (eg. a canis familiaris wanting their frisbee out of the h2o, a cat suddenly becoming fascinated with a cracker) if they do not acquaintance desirable or adverse characteristics with information technology? And do people really believe an animal cannot differentiate their own body from their surroundings?
Overall, it is certainly a pro-animal rights book and a good intro read.

This is an admirably clear and instructive introduction to the philosophy and applied bug (and some solutions) surrounding our interaction with other animals. Gruen runs through the usual suspects (utilitarianism, rights, likewise as ethic-of-care feminism) and outlines the problems surrounding animals in captivity, animals used for enquiry and food, and companion and wild animals, with a final segment on activism. Gruen runs through the usual suspects (utilitarianism, rights, as well as ethic-of-intendance feminism) and outlines the bug surrounding animals in captivity, animals used for research and food, and companion and wild fauna, with a terminal segment on activism. Her book is marked past an attention to our electric current knowledge of beast cognition and hefty doses of natural science, as well as a welcome insistence on specificities and context rather than high-flown pronouncements and unimpeachable but impracticable theory. Her tone is wry and humane—no magisterial denunciations for her—and she is acutely aware of the challenges we all have in balancing human and animal interests in a world defined by human activeness and animal endangerment. The book could have been longer, with perhaps more case studies, and I, for one, remain unimpressed by data that prove that animals are smarter than we think they are (every bit if that should matter in how we care for them). Just Gruen'due south is even so one of the most readable introductions to animal ideals I've come across in two decades of immersion in this bailiwick. ...more

Essential antidote to the ungrounded theorizing of the male philosophers whose abstract idea(l)s have inhibited rather than facilitated constructive brute liberation activism.

Don't be fooled by the textbook tone. Essential antidote to the ungrounded theorizing of the male philosophers whose abstract idea(l)s have inhibited rather than facilitated effective animal liberation activism.

Don't exist fooled by the textbook tone. While the book volition work beautifully as an uncommonly engaging college textbook, Gruen is (every bit usual) upward to something much more subtly powerful than laying out the usual arguments in terms that students can understand. She covers almost every upstanding question apropos human-animal relations, not only answering common challenges in ways that animal advocates may find helpful to model simply as well and most importantly including the (eco)feminist perspectives that you lot don't even know be if you've been reading Vocalizer, Reagan, and Francione. These tend, on the whole, to destabilize the faux dichotomies underlying socially synthetic dilemmas, thereby clearing the way for creative solutions.

Articulate thinking and what Gruen calls "engaged empathy" -- that's exactly what the animate being liberation movement needs right now. I feel so strongly about that that my system (VINE Sanctuary) is going to start carrying this book in addition to those in which I've got chapters.

Gruen has a gift for making nuanced ethical arguments easily accessible. Every bit an animal advocate, I establish this book extremely helpful as a guide to frame and extend my more intuitive approach to thinking about animals, animal rights and my personal engagement with animals. The vivid illustrative scenes that situate the reader in each chapter actually footing the philosophical discussion, never allowing information technology to veer off into intellectual abstraction. It is not a hard book to read. In fact, I found information technology very engaging. It tin be demanding, though, only in that it really challenges yous to consider your ethical opinion towards animals in a variety of situations that are not always comfortable to consider. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking an intelligent, comprehensive and eminently readable introduction to ideals and animals. ...more

This gets four stars because I've read a bunch of animal/environmental ideals and behavior this summertime so the outset parts virtually why animals matter morally and why factory farms are bad were pretty dang repetitive.

But so once she gets past the factory subcontract Lori Gruen hits her stride, and it'south crawly. Including ecofeminist assay offered some interesting twists on the standard Vocalist/Regan stuff. Role of the power of Animal Liberation is that Vocalizer doesn't looove animals, he only feels moral

This gets 4 stars because I've read a bunch of creature/ecology ethics and behavior this summer so the first parts about why animals matter morally and why factory farms are bad were pretty dang repetitive.

But and so in one case she gets past the mill farm Lori Gruen hits her stride, and information technology's awesome. Including ecofeminist analysis offered some interesting twists on the standard Singer/Regan stuff. Part of the ability of Creature Liberation is that Singer doesn't looove animals, he only feels morally moved to help them. But Gruen has her own kind of power in her clear deep, loving empathy for these creatures.

Fantastic (admitting biased; only not in a horrible way [I'm biased as well in this expanse!]) introduction to Animal Ideals. The book was well laid out and the theoretical capacity especially so. A much needed affiliate on activism rounded out the volume which was very helpful in clarifying where one should stand if actively engaging in this movement. Solidly summarizes arguments regarding beast ethics and makes a case for animal rights

Although this was intended as a textbook I read it for pleasure and enjoyed information technology. The author pulls arguments from a many unlike philosophers and uses plenty of modern examples.

This seems like it would exist a actually useful reference to use in educational activity - the chapters provide good overviews of diverse topics in animal ethics, rather than arguing for specific positions, and would be a good entry bespeak on a lot of these ideas.
